Martial arts in a safe, fun environment builds confidence, resilience, and practical skills
Kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for kids offers a fun outlet for children to learn a sport that challenges both the mind and body. Misfit Combat teaches jiu jitsu in a safe, permissive environment that blends aspects of traditional martial art training with ways to make the class engaging and age appropriate for kids 5-12 years old. Kids exercise while learning cooperation and sport skills that translate into self defense. Kids can earn promotion through the children’s’ belt rankings as they progress in technical ability. At 16 years old the adult belt ranking system applies.
Skills taught include how to fall without injury, wrestling (double leg take down, sprawl), basic take downs (outside foot sweep), fundamental submissions (armbars, americanas, triangles), positional awareness (full guard, side control, full mount) and escapes (trap and roll, hip bump sweep). The rules of the sport of jiu jitsu are taught and the applicability of the movements to self defense is also discussed in an age appropriate manner. Sport jiu jitsu rules are structured for safety of younger practitioners by keeping certain submissions illegal to play for certain age groups. Misfit Combat follows this graduated ruleset for kids under 16.

Tuesday and Thursday 50 minute kids jiujitsu classes run 20 minutes of warm up movements and stretching, then 30 minutes of technical jiujitsu instruction that is broken into segments intermixed with game breaks. Kids are introduced to Brazilian jiu jitsu sparring in short rounds at the end of class. Kids jiu jitsu classes bow in and out of class in the traditional manner.
The Gi uniform and belt is required for Tuesday and Thursday classes. Misfit Combat has loaner Gi uniforms available for beginners. Comfortable exercise clothing is worn under the Gi. Please arrive five minutes early if you need to try on a Gi for practice. Participants should tie back long hair and keep finger nails trimmed.
Youth Martial Arts

Our Sunday youth martial arts class is a mix of boxing, kickboxing, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in one 60 minute class. Technical martial art teaching is broken up with games involving exercise. Kids are introduced to supervised kickboxing sparring and Brazilian jiu jitsu sparring in short rounds at the end of class. Sunday class does not require a Gi uniform. Kids should wear comfortable clothing like shorts or sweat pants and a tee shirt. Participants should tie back long hair and have finger nails trimmed.
